SLOW Browsing of Internet

Over the past week, I am having intermittent slow browsing problems.  I connect with a 56k modem via Erols (RCN).  At times it can take over one minute to view a web page and then 1/2 hour later it might be almost immediate.  When I test my PC using McAfee's online site I get response speeds of about 10kbps when it is slow and then 5 minutes later 30kbps.  It seems to me that my ISP is have a problem, but when I called for technical support, they claimed they are not.  They told me there have been problems with their "web accelorator" and to remove it which I did, but the problems continue.  Any ideas?

One possibility is transient line quality. If there is construction on the line, or the line has been transitioned to a different type of network, the modem may be throttling the connection up and down in order to compensate. There is no solution for this, as this is a function of the phone company.

The other possibility is the fact that your line is being used by malware and/or viruses on your system. Ensure that your antivirus software has been fully updated with the most recent virus and worm definitions, and perform a complete system scan. If this does not resolve the error, you may also need to run an excess software removal tool on your system such as AdAware or SpyBot.
