Slow Connect/intermittent Access

I am having the worse time with my network. After working just fine for months, suddenly my laptop only gets online on and off (more off!) and it says I have a very low signal strength. If I connect the cable modem directly to the PC Desktop, the desktop in online just fine. The minute I run the cable modem to the router and the desktop to the router, the both computers lose the internet connection.

The really strange thing is that I am connected right now with my laptop which is connected to my router by way of a cable but the router is not connected to the cable modem. I thought the router had to be connected to cable modem in order to work. Interestingly enough, my icons tell me my connection is coming from the Dell 1350 network card I left inserted in my laptop. How can I be utilizing the router with the network card if the router is not connected to the cable modem?

Someone please help. Thanks

APhoenixRisen,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

I have no explanation for this, unless, your cable modem also has wireless capabilities.  It is not possible for your system to be on the internet unless it is connected to some network or cable modem.  You need to see what network you are on.  You may find that you are connected through a neighbor's wireless router.
