Slow Connection Problems with Dial up modems

Question

Ok , this may sound crazy but after a month of troubleshooting and guessing, I finally resolved my problem. Initially when my dial up was 'good', I would connect anywhere from 33 KBPS to 41 KBPS. And then the problems started. It refused to connect faster than 19.2 KBPS, no matter how many times I reconnected. I tried 'System Restore' no luck I unistalled my modem driver and then reinstalled. no luck I physically removed the modem and drivers , rebooted without a modem, reinstalled the modem and drivers, no luck. I had the phone company check my phone line, there was a problem, but not all of it. HOLY SMOKE !! 21 KBPS WOW!!!! I replaced the modem with a U.S. Robotics V.92 Fax Win Int. No luck I installed some software that came with the modem. It had the capability of 'tweaking' your modem settings. 9.2 KBPS , Oh No !! Reset the modem to original configuration and uninstalled that US Robotics software. 9.2 KBPS Oh No again. Unistalled the modem drivers, rebooted reinstalled. Goody back to 21 KBPS ( Never will install the awful software again) Ok getting desperate, formatted, yes formatted the hard drive. Reinstalled Win XP. After many hours , no luck. ( pulling my hair out) Tried the old modem again, no luck. Finally went to Windows XP info database. Typed in ' Slow dial up connections. It came up with several solutions which I had tried ( and then some ) BUT the very last suggestion was to locate all the old modem drivers that had been replaced with updated drivers. So I did. You will have to get all the file names included in all the drivers you had used, I installed them , went to driver details, and wrote down all the file names for all the drivers I had used (3 in my case) I then went to C:Windows directory and found 2, (ess6hpi.exe and rem vdsii.exe) and deleted them. Next I went to C:Windows/System32/Driver folder. Found all of the files and deleted them. (About 7 of them) Rebooted. When windows restarted, it found my modem but could not find any drivers ( this is good ). I manually installed by correct updated driver. Rebooted, with fingers crossed. With sweat dripping down my forehead, I clicked my internet connection. YAHOO 45.2 KBPS !!!!! This is faster than I have ever connected, and I connect at that speed everytime.
