slow download

Hi all,
I've had dsl for some time and have always had a vary slow download rate. When I initiate the download no matter what site I am download from the rate is always 20k/sec or less. I don't know if I'm downloading a directory or database or if it has to do with my active  x control settings? I'm tired of paying the conveinence of dsl and allowing my pc to take 2-3 hours to download a file. Comments to solving my issue would be greatly appreciated
I would like to thank you in advance

You need to go to www.dslreports.com and run their speed tests and read about their tweaking tools.  My inital thought is that you MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) is set too low.

Sounds most definitely like an ISP problem if you get his speed from all sites, however, I would advise you to go to www.dslreports.com and run their speed tests and read about the tweaking tools.

I agrre that it is just a minor tweak needed since all of your downloads are affected.

jmwills-

I appreciate the info and will check out the site you mentioned as well as their "tweaking" tools and update. The reason why i would agree that settings just need tweaking is that people near me (friends less than a mile away) with same ip dont have this problem. Since my post I have downloaded adaware se plus with no possitive results for my issue. Thanks agian I hope update this later today

jmwill,

well, the saga  continues...

went to dslreports.com and attempted to access the link to their "tweak tesk" at ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/blo.. with no luck. My browser say can not find server which happens ALOT. Possibly solved by the tweaking my pc needs? I thought I read somewhere in their forum that link died. Dunno if there is another or what to do now... another thing is the test distance from co was inconclusive. Tried Lowering firewall. Still nothing in both tests. Guess I picked an accurate name.

You probably need the most current version of Java software.

I don't understand.  I tried the tweaks suggested in the forum in DRTCP i.e. setting RWIN using the formula they provide.

The formula for finding your "ideal" RWIN, is to take your latency (average ping time in ms x 1.5), multiply that by your advertised (download) speed, and divide that by 8.

My average latency 143ms x 1.5 x 1500divide by 8 = about 40218, right?

When I enter these settings in DRTCP and reboot  no change in my issue (downloading )

also ping times are much higher. After running tweat test abain it the RWIN should be between 14440 and 38880

I don't even have any luck updating and posting results froms test.
