Slow DSL Internet Connection

Hi,
I'm using a Dimension 2350 (Windows XP) with DSL Modem & my internet connection greatly varies from 100kb/sec to 1000kb/sec.  My DSL provider is Verizon & they said it's not their line, because they said they tested it & was ok.  They also said the connection should be 1.5mb/sec.

Also, I have been using this ISP w/DSL for over 1.5 years & never a problem until about a month ago.  I have run Mcafee virus scan, Adware, Spybot, Windows Spyware and still slow connection.

I don't know where else to turn.

Thanks in advance!

are you connecting via USB or ethernet?  ethernet is highly recommended.  are you using a router in between the modem and your computer?

you can try a program called cablenut (google it).  install it and load up the appropriate DSL tweaks and see if they help.

sites like testmy.net  and the speakeasy speedtest sites (google speakeasy speedtest) are good places to test in my opinion.

vem, per his post he is using a single resident AV and anti-spware...

there's nothing wrong with using ad-aware (free), spybot, and windows defender, plus AV.

What i mean to say is that at the background of the system services this antispuware and adware ervices will be running so this alos make some times sytem slow  and even the internet connection become slow i exp the same problem one month back when i disable the spyware my internet connection is little bit fast ok

With no programs open and your connection running (do not open your browser), check the task manager to see how much CPU usage is occuring.  If your system is clean you should see System Idle process at about 99%.

ok it is  correct it should not show cpu usage as 100 % with any process running then i do accept that but he did not mentioned that his cpu usage is 100 % he means it is slow ok  throughly up date the antivirus and spwares and window s up dates the scan the system i think this should solve  the problem

No, with nothing running except a live connection and CPU usage at 100%, obviously something is causing all those cycles.  What in the system processes is running to any significant degree?

sorry if I'm confused here but where did the OP (or anyone for that matter) actually say that CPU util was high?
