bet your DNS is not setup right:

 Enabled netbios over tcpip and set the win2k server as the first choice on the DNS list

both of these solutions resulted in fast logons and browsing

I only have one entry for DNS server on my system.

I tried selecting enable netbios over tcpip and it didn't really make much difference.

When I disabled netbios over tcpip network browsing was a lot faster.. however file access was still slow.. :-(

Another possibility is link speed negotiation problems. Especially for servers, it's important that the link speed and duplex settings be specified, both on the server and network switch.

Do you have a WINS server running on the Win2K server? That will always speed up browsing if there's one available, and all the machines are registered with it. Note also that if all the machines are Win2K or later, NetBIOS over TCP isn't necessary, according to Microsoft.
