SLOW internet surfing, anybody got initialization string?

Hey all, I have a very new Dell Dimension 2400 with an Intel 537EP V9x DF PCI modem. Loading of web pages can sometimes be incredibly slow...even grinding to a halt at times. I've been going back n' forth with my ISP to figure it out for months.

My PC has been disk cleaned, defragged, and virus checked...the whole bit. My phone line is only 7' long. It's a very new PC, so it can't be bogged down with garbage (I keep it pretty clean anyway). I have 768MB RAM. The only problem I can see is that I live in a apartment community that has tons of residents, many of which may have internet access, as well.

Dial-up is fine. But once I get on-line, pages will just load so slowly at times (or rarely stop loading). My ISP was out of ideas, so they suggested I get a string from Intel, but they're claiming to not support their 537EP modems.

Thus, I'm here!

Anybody know of a initialization string that can help me communicate with my ISP through my 537EP? Or am I just out of luck because of where I live?

Eagerly awaiting any responses,
Cheesequake

If the modem connection is OK and relatively fast connection speed, then there is no initialization string that will help you.

However, the modem connection speed is only one part of the overall "big picture".  There is also the "data throughput speed" which will vary at any given moment based on the condition of the telephone line at the time, how good your modem is and how good the ISP's modem is.  There is no "modem string" for that either.

The rest is the ISP's bandwidth (capability andspeed) between where their modem is and their servers, their servers, their bandwidth (connection) to the web and finally the web it'self.  There can be issues internally in the PC with video, memory, processor speed, how much you have open at one time, etc but most of it, providing the modem connect speed is good, is external to the PC.

ADDED: One other thought, change ISP's.  I had problems with dial-up on one ISP I had and when I changed to a different one things sped up considerably.  I'm now on cable and obviously line speed is not an issue.

Thanks a lot Fireberd. I really appreciate the rapid response. I will direct my stress energies elsewhere...and I agree. Petal steel is THE guitar.
