Some numbers connect, some don"t.

new inspiron 1505.  conexant hda d110 mdc v.92 modem.
i use my laptop in 2 places.  milwaukee and eagle river, wi.  i have a local access number to use at each place.
from milwaukee i can connect to either number.
from eagle river i can connect to milwaukee but not the local eagle river number !!!  how can this be ?
i can connect in all cases using a 4 year old ibm thinkpad, so i know the phone lines etc are fine.
i have upgraded the modem driver from version 7.32 to 7.38.  no help.
I have painstakingly compared the 2 laptop setups but find nothing different.  they both run xp.
please please help.
thank you.

Since you are connecting to one location OK from Eagle river, it is not your hardware.  If it was your hardware you would not be able to connect to anyplace.  It would also appear you telephone line is OK since you can connect to one site.

Could it be the telephone number is set wrong for the Eagle River location. If you have it set to dial into a local Eagle River number from some other location you probably have the area code and maybe even "1" set.  If you are dialing locally in Eagle River you don't want the "1" or the area code - just the local number.

thanks for the response.
i agree it makes no sense.
i dial the local numbers as local numbers....no area code or 1.......xxx-xxxx.
i dial the long distance numbers as long dist ......1-xxx-xxx-xxxx.
i agree the phone line is fine.  the server must be fine on the other end since i can connect to it with another laptop locally or with my dell long dist from milwaukee.
this is incredibly frustrating.
is it possible there is an init string or something i need ?
or a setting or check box i'm not seeing or setting properly ?
ive been working on this the past couple saturdays, but can really only work on it from eagle river where i'm having the problem and i'm only here weekends.
anybody have anything else ?
thanks.

Add the string  AT&F to the modem initialization string.  That forces the modem to do a reset before it dials.

thanks again for your response.
where exactly do i add the init string ?
also, the old thinkpad has a v.90 modem.  my new dell has a v.92.  could this be an issue ?  is it possible the phone co hardware doesnt like the new v.92 ?   it is a rural area and their equipment could be old or outdated.  they do insist their equipment is fine, though.  i realize v.92 should be backward compatible, but.............is there some way for the v.92 to emulate a v.90 with an init string or ??
i will be going up there again tomorrow and would like as much ammunition as possible.  its 5hrs one way.  ugh :)
thanks again.

Fisklvd, in Windows Device Manager select the Modem from the hardware list.  Right click your mouse on the your modem listing and then select Properties from the menu.  From the next windows choose the  Advance tab and then enter the AT&F in the Extra Settings box and then click Ok

Being a rural phone service they probably have newer circuitry to connect long distance to the Milwaukee area where as their local connection maybe consist of older equipment not optimized for use with a v.92 modem.  Back in my dialup days, I ran into similar problems and I'm 6 miles from the Michigan border north of Green Bay.  And of course the phone company will always tell you their equipment is fine.   :smileywink:   In my situation things improved dramatically when they changed the whole town over to underground wiring and updated the local equipment office.  It's now even better with the DSL.

If Fireberd's command doesn't work then try this command instead......  AT+DS1,0   That command, if I'm reading your modem's User Guide correctly, should turn off the v.44 compression and force it to use v.42 compression like your other v.90 modem in the Thinkpad.

Fisklvd, I did a little more checking on the Internet......  try this command as well:  AT+MS=V90    Again, it should force your modem to act like the V.90 in your Thinkpad.
