Something going around breaking TCP/IP?

I see several posts about broadband connections intermittently not working.  Though I can't say they are all related, I'm wondering if there is something that could be causing it live a virus/trojan that has messed with IP protocol?

Anybody come across something like that?

phantomco,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Are you using a router connected to the cable modem box? If so, disconnect the router and go straight from the cable modem box to the network card on the system to see if the problem persist.

Jesse,

After some playing around, it's more specific than that.  (It is a DSL router with built-in hub, btw).

For example, Yahoo msgr never loses connection as long as it's running.  Same with an online game.  But if I exit the game, after it working fine for an hour, Internet explorer and email no longer connect. Messenger running in the background is fine.  Not sure about the other way around (IE--> game), need to try that as well.  The game won't connect if it has been idle for any length of time, though messenger is still working okay.

I am not sure if this is related. My internet connection seemed to drop after the computer was idle for long periods ( I have a DLink wireless router). I called tech support and they said Zonealarm may be causing the problem. Removed ZoneAlarm and now the connection isn't dropped.
