Static IP address setup

Question

ok, real quick. I have a Truemobile 2300 with two Inspiron 8600s networked through it. Everything works fine, but I seem to have the intermittent cycling and dropping from the router that everyone else is complaining of. So I would like to set up static IP addressing. Well, I went through the router setup, disabled DHCP and plugged in IP addresses for each computer...no problem. I went into the IP/TCP properties of each computer and plugged in the IP address, subnet mask and gateway IP address...no problem. Now, the router resets somewhere in this process (when I saved the changes). The computers are connected to the network (router) and I cannot access the internet. If someone could direct me to the post with the static IP setup steps or send me the same, I'd be so appreciative...I would; OR, clue in the clueless and point out what I missed. Should I repeat the steps and restart the computers? I'm not a networking pro, but I do not feel out of my element here...
