Status "Not Associated"
Be gentle, I am a wireless novice. Bought my son a dell laptop for graduation. Installed a wireless router on my PC. PC works great. Router seems to be working great.
The new dell laptop does indeed "see" the router wireless network signal. It is connected to that wireless network. However, when I attempt to gain access to the internet, it will not connect.
When I run my mouse pointer over the wireless icon in my tool tray, it brings up a small screen that tells me it is connected to the network, the signal is good, and it has the IP address...but is also says "Status: Not Associated"
Is that why I can't get on to the 'net?? I have e-mailed dell, but the response I got from them was "we don't know, look at our wireless self help"...I went to the wireless self help info, but nothing addresses my problem.
Anyone in here want to take a crack at it before I call in Dell's warranty?

What happens if you type into the browser a TCP/IP address rather than English text?
What is the TCP/IP address of your gateway (router)?
You may need/want to Add that address to the computer as gateway address.
The instructions IPCONFIG.ALL >My.txt
are intended for you to be able to report back.
Start | Run CMD press [Enter]
C: press Enter
CD \ press Enter
MD \DOWNLOAD press Enter
CD \DownLOAD press Enter
IPCONFIG /ALL >My.TXT press Enter
EXIT press Enter
Now run either Notepad or Wordpad and find the 'My.txt' (open and read it, copy in order to paste here) which tells all about your connection(s) in the C: DOWNLOAD folder

Thank you very much for your reply...but you are speaking beyond my knowlege. I am comfortable working with my computer and I do know more than the average Joe Citizen, but I only partially understand what you're saying. I can do what you're asking, if you can please take the time to put it a little more plainly. Where will I find the area to make the advanced settings? I am aware of what you're saying, but for the life of me I can't recall how to get there. And if I need to make the change to allow windows to manage the router, using the IPCONFIG command, can you also please refresh my memory on how to get to that screen...that's the DOS screen you want for that one, correct?
Thanks!
As far as my wireless connection, it's a simple Belkin router...right now I have not set up any security for it, it's wide open. My son's new laptop can see the signal and connect to it...but no matter what limited changes I attempt to make, I cannot get that computer to connect to the net. The belkin router software has assigned an IP address to his computer and I have "cloned" my PC's MAC address into the router, on the off chance my ISP was blocking the new computer....but still to no avail.

Does Windows manage the wireless?
Proprietary?
To connect to the internet, you will need both DHCP and DNS.
Make sure the settings specify 'Use DHCP to obtain TCP/IP address automatically'
If Windows does not manage the wireless now, used 'Advanced' to allow Windows to manage it.
IPCONFIG /ALL >My.TXT
and then you can COPY (using Notepad or WordPad) and paste the resulting report of details of your wireless connection.

Thanks very much....surprisingly enough I understand most of what you're saying....but right now I am leaving for work...but I will try what you suggest later (it may not be until tomorrow). I will let you know the results.
Just one clarification...I do not know exactly what you mean when you say I may need to add the gateway address to my computer. I believe I understand what the gateway address is, I know how to get that...(it is the IP address of the router, correct?)...and I understand what you mean when you're asking me to put that into the laptop's browser to see what happens...but when you ask me to "add" it to the computer, can you please explain?
Thank you so much for your patience with me. I run a very successful web forum for Harley tech, I am familiar with the difficulties of troubleshooting over the 'net, especially when trying to explain some basic functions to a person that is unfamilar with any of it. By the way, if you ever need mechanical assistance with any Harley, I'm your man!!
