Strange problem with router & cable modem

Hi,
A little background...I live in a different town than my parents, but we both have the same cable provider, so I am able to carry my cable modem with me to both places and access the Internet (although my parents do not subscribe to cable Internet and I do). I have been doing this for about six months with no problems...until recently.

Along with my cable modem, I also use a Linksys wireless router so all computers are able to use the Internet and also use home networking. Now the cable modem seems to lock-up once in awhile when it is connected to the router, but this doesn't happen when I connect the modem directly to the computer. This only happens at my parents, and very rarely at my apartment (usually once after getting back).

Does anyone know what could be going on? If the cable provider is blocking the Internet to my parents, wouldn't they block the modem..not the router?

Let me know of something isn't clear...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

i have no idea what your ISP is doing as far as protections go for it's service.  I doubt anyone here will, though you should try posting and or searching at broadbandreports.com

otherwise, keep in mind that most cable modems need to be power cycled anytime a new device is plugged into them -- you can't do a hot switch between a desktop and a router for instance.

Make sure you aren't running a USB cable from the modem to the desktop and a CAT5 to the router.  You should only have CAT5 going from modem to router and the use CAT5 from router into desktop.  Running both USB and CAT5 from the modem will create conflicts.
