i'm sure there is an answer to your actual question, but this is what i do instead.
on the router I assign a specific IP to each comptuter, as identified by the MAC of each machine's network card.
when I want to address one machine from another, instead of refering to LINDA I refer to \\192.168.2.30. A mapped drive on her machine might be\\192.168.2.60\D$
each machine's workgroup is the same, WORKGROUP i think, but it could just as easily be MSHOME. The thing is, by using a specific IP for each machine, all the players know immediately where the other players are, and there is no "are you LINDA" handshaking going on anywhere. it's faster.
i don't know what's going on at your house, but it could be that at one time one machine was assigned .107 and thinks it owns that IP, even though it was more recently assigned .101. A hard assignment by the router might take care of that.
I don't do anything on the PC side to specify what IP it should use. the PC thinks DHCP is dynamic. The router just assigns each machine the same IP every time.
