system standy by failure

THE DEVICE DRIVER FOR THE BCM V.92 56K MODEM DEVICE IS PREVENTING THE MACHINE FROM ENTERING STANDY BY MODE.  THIS ERROR MESSAGE APPEARS  WHEN I TRY TO PUT THE MACHINE INTO STANDY BY MODE

Besides you modem having a problem, I'd say your Shift key is stuck.  All caps is shouting, and we all hear just fine.  That error is usually caused by a program having an update manager holding the modem to look for updates.  Quicken is one such program.

Some program is keeping the modem held, thus you cannot standby.

Please post here and not message me.  You need to know your software and use process of elimination to know which program is causing it.

Hello,

I had the same problem this past weekend. Here is what I can tell you. I installed (upgrade to Quicken 2003 Deluxe) from that point on the program would no longer go into standby mode. I recieved a message that the BCM V.92.. DRiver had a problem and was preventing the computer from entering standby mode. I tried to use the dell utility to fix the modem problem no luck. I basically had to go to the device manager remove the modem. reboot and then reinstall. Now the dell program works again. My only question is How do I install quicken without freaking out my computer?

Turn off Quicken's Update Manager.

I do not know, I do not have or use that software.  I can tell you that will solve the problem, and that it has to be under one of the pull-down menus at the top bar of the program - investigate and learn something.
