TCP/IP protocol not installed
The computer is just over one year old -- teenagers "im-ing" , my space, and music downloads. Started booting off the internet and prompting to shut down. Then it would not allow log an at times. says winsock not installed, but allows some usage (not on line).
Finally an error stating TCP/IP protocol not properly installed. Went to Verizon on line support and followed directions to release and reset the protocol. Release went OK but could not reset. Verizon tech, support said that the modem was unable to read the NIC card.
we have this additional PC so it;s been a couple of weeks since then. Meanwhile, I opened the case and removed an extreme amount of dust (WOW). Still has the same problem and now there is a sort of high pitched winding sound that seems to come from the floppy drive is annoying , if nothing else. HELP ? Thankyou

"Started booting off the internet and prompting to shut down"
What does this mean?
There is or was some bad stuff (malware) floating around myspace recently, installing to you pc without consent.
I suggest you get AdAware program and run on your PC

If you still have tcp/ip problems I have a method to completly remove and reinstall the tcp/ip stack for windows XP, but is not for the newbie, could cause more problems if not done exactly as described.

Thank you for your response. I meant that we would get "kicked off" of the internet and then prompted to "switch user, restart, or shut down".
McGaffee security is installed on the computer.
I'm not exactly a newbie and follow directions well. I would like to have instructions to remove and reinstall the tcp/ip stack.
Any insight regarding the grinding noise after removing the mountain of dust that the computer had apparently thought belonged there after so long.( the comp belonged to my bf and his daughter before I moved in - that's why I was reluctant to open i t up right away). Again , thank you.

Ok here it is
In the Registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
Delete "Winsock" and "Winsock2" folders. DO NOT REBOOT
Go To Local area connection Properties, on the General Tab Click Install, Select Protocol, click "add", Click "Have Disk", type in "C:\windows\inf", select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", click OK, Let install finish. NOW REBOOT. Done
Before deleting the key in the registry navigate to the Lan properties as described to be sure you know how to get there.
As for the noise, replace any device that is making the noise, the dust is normal and should be gently blown out once a year.
