This is really getting on my nerves!

Dim 8400, US Robotics (model 8001) router and RoadRunner cable service. Nothing wireless, all hardwired. Surfing around and occasionally, when clicking a link, (too occasionally)---I get a window with the following message:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's, also, a "Retry" button to click which, in most cases, doesn't help.

I have to "power off" the router then "power up" the router and usually this corrects the problem; however, not always. Sometimes I have to, not only, "power down" the router but "power down" the cable modem, also, in order to correct the problem. If I bypass the router, I don't have the problem "as regular"; but, it still occurs.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to stop this from happening or is it something I'm going to have to live with?

By the way, when my agreement with RR expires, I'm going back to DSL. DSL runs circles around cable. For anyone who believes cable is as fast or faster than DSL---it just "ain't so". RR cable sometimes is as slow as dialup.

Thanks!

You obviously have a router problem.  Many routers require software from the router vendor to work correctly.  If you have software for the router, I'd try reloading it.  If you connect the main PC directly to the cable modem do you still have the problems?

As far as RR, I have RR (Tampa Bay) and have over 5Mb download speeds - consistently.  I don't know of any DSL that will run at or even near that speed.   If you have a bad cable line that can account for slow speeds.  You need at least a 0dbm or better signal at the cable modem for proper operation.

I had DSL at one time and CONSISTENTLY, I would have a line outage at least once a week and Verizon was useless.

Thanks Firebird. As previously stated, "if I bypass the router, I don't have the problem as regular; but, it still occurs." Not as often, but, the same message does appear, on occasion, when the 8400 is "hooked" straight into the cable modem. Didn't have this problem with DSL, either.

RR slows down when traffic/connections increase. I notice it beginning in early evening when more people, getting home from work, start accessing the net. As I stated earlier, it sometimes is as slow as dialup; but, at times when you know more people are online with RR. I had always read about RR slowing down as traffic increased and, in my case, it is very true. As my neighbor (very experienced in telephone installations, trouble-shooting, etc.), has stated to me----that is one of the "problems" with internet cable----slowing down during increased usage.

Anyway to reiterate, my original problem can and does occur whether I'm using the router or not.

I don't have any "slowdowns" with my RR.  Must not be many on the link that I'm on.

But, I used to get it with DSL as they had me on a channel with a Bank and when the Bank started up in the morning my DSL went to you know what.  I complained enough that they moved me to a different channel and that helped but I never got close to the speed the channel was supposed to be.

The problem with cable is that you speed can go to Zero, depending on how may users are online in your neighborhood at the same time... I was lucky in my neighborhood, I think I was the only one that had cable internet, never had a problem..
Yes go to DSL to solve this over saturation problem of cable in your area..

Not everyone has DSL available.  Where I live, I'm more than 3 miles from the telco central office.  Fortunately I do have cable (roadrunner).

You have to be withing 15,000 ft of the telco office and be on "straight copper" - no repeaters for DSL.
