Transferring Files Between Computers

I know this isn't an entirely appropriate place to post this, but it's the closest forum that I could find on Dell's website.

I would like to transfer a few large files from my desktop computer to my recently purchased laptop computer. I was wondering what the easiest way to do this would be. Every website that I can find tries to involve the internet somehow, which doesn't seem practical in this case.

Any suggestions?
I can give more details on my situation if you need them.

Thanks!

Do both machine have network cards? If so, that would be the easiest way.

Like the last guy said, if you have network adapters in each machine, you'll just need a crossed cable to link them, or a hub. As long as both machines have IP addresses, either put in by you, or automatically configured, then you simply map a drive to a share that you created on the new machine.

Take a look around the net for simple networking tips, and you should be moving files in no time.

...Thanks guys.

I know absolutely nothing when it comes to home networking (I don't even know if my computer have network cards), so this will be a bit of a stretch for me.

But I will do my best to try and figure this out.

If anyone has any links to any good basic networking tutorials, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

     Here's a link I found useful:

http://www.cellarstoneindia.com/stepup/stepup_cable_connections.htm

It tells you in detail how to set up the transfer using different types of cable connections.  I picked up an Ethernet crossover cable on eBay for about $7, and then followed the directions here to transfer the files from my old laptop to my new one.  Worked great.
