Trouble setting up home network

Question

I have 3 dell computers in my house, two laptops and a desktop.  The communication portal is in my office where I have ethernet connected to the router and the other two pc's communicate via wireless.  All computers connect to the internet excellently, no problems.  So, connectivity is fine.   I am trying to network these computers to share files and printers and can't seem to get this to work.  All machines are running XP and I run the network setup wizard.  I have tried various options, but none of the machines recognize each other.  I look at the router and see the attached devices and have the IP addresses but all the machines can only ping their own address.   I setup the network with a residential gateway and all machines show that on network connections.  But, can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here in getting these machines to talk to each other.  Anyone have any ideas ???

The most likely cause of the problem is a third party firewall (Norton, McAfee, Zone Alarm, etc.) that is not configured to all local network access.   Steve

Well, I was sure I had set that accordingly before I started, but when I doubled checked after your reply, nope, didn't stick.  I changed the settings and off and running.  Easy solution, thanx anyway ...
