It appears, from your description that you are using a USB connection to your DSL modem and that's where the problem is. 

The USB connection is the least desireable and can be problematic.  The first thing I'd look at is the drivers that were supplied with the DSL modem (reinstall the drivers). 

However, the best (and most desireable) connection is to use the Ethernet connection (if you have the Ethernet interface).  It is designed for communications interface.  The Ethernet, if you have it, will have an "RJ45" 8 pin modular connection (similar to the standard 4 pin telephone connection but larger since it's 8 pins).  Most DSL modems have provisions for either USB or Ethernet.
