Trouble with new router

I have an Inspiron 8600 with what I beleive to be a Intel Pro wireless built in LAN inside (centrino )
I just purchased a Linksys broadband wireless router and wish to communicate with a desktop through it. My laptop can't find the router...anything I can do to ensure the internal parts on laptop are working (transmitting and receiving)?

Do you have a wireless connection icon with 4 bars on it in the lower right hand part of your screen?


How far away is the router from the laptop?
