True Mobile 1150 peer to peer net problem

I have a M60 laptop with a 1300 wireless which I use for Internet connections.  I also have a XPS tower with a PCMCIA  adapter  and a 1150 Wireless PCCard.  I cannot get a peer to peer connection to work.   Laptop XP to Tower Linux     I would like to run TightVNC (1.29) between the two.  I want a dedicated wireless link between them.   The hardwire net crossover cable works fine.  I have even tried 2-1150 cards and ran True mobile client manager, 

CM found the tower machine fine.....Reported the tower network name and signal strength. BUT cannot ping the fixed IP from laptop to tower no DHCP involved.  BTW the tower is headless....
