Unable to configure router

I have a Dell Dimemsion 8250 computer.  I just purchase a Linksys Wireless G router and when I try to configure the router using their setup disk I get unable to see router, make sure your PC is connected to the router. If your PC is connected to the router, press the reset button on the back of the router for 15 seconds to reset the router back to factory default.  I thought the router was bad so I returned it to the store and got another one, but I still get the same message.  Please Help!

Yes I have a wired ethernet connection.  I also tried connecting to 192.68.1.1 and I get a page cannot be display.  Why I ping that address I do get a reply.

Are you plugging the computer into the router with a wired ethernet connection?  If not, try it that way.  For nearly all routers, you do not need to use the software.  Instead you can access the router configuration program using a web browser.  For Linksys models, open a web browser and type http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar.  Of course all of this is stated in the manual that comes with the router.

You say "I also tried connecting to 192.68.1.1 and I get a page cannot be display..."  It should be 192.168.1.1

techsupport4free,

Welcome to the forum.  As you know, some of the problems posted here can get pretty thorny, so it's always good to have another knowledgeable individual looking at them.

One thing I would like to point out, however, is that this is more than simply a discussion forum.  It is also a huge searchable database.  I'm sure you are well aware that most problems are not new.  If new members take the time to use the Advanced Search facility they will probably find their solution.  Of course, taking the troubleshooting offline, either via telephone or email, defeats the searchable database capability.  Please bear that in mind and allow everyone to benefit from your knowledge.

You might want to take a look at  Denny Denham's Dell|Talk Personal Observations Page and scroll down to the "Evaluating the Experts" section.  Good advice there.
