Upgrade private network switches and router

I´m going to upgrade my network switches to gigabit as my server and rest of my network, allthough not WAN-router, support gigabit. Got any suggestions regarding what switch to choose ? Perhaps you also can suggest a router with 100 Mb WAN-LAN/LAN-WAN throughput and with gigabit switch ?

why do you need gigabit on the router if your switches are gigabit?  what's on the other side of the router?  please describe your network setup more.

Also, how many ports do you need?

  managed or unmanaged?

I picked up a nice 16port unmanaged gigabit switch made by SMC off ebay for $100.  The fan's a bit loud but it's always worked great.

My network is built like a tree why two switches and one router/switch are needed. Hence three switces are needed. WAN is fully 100/100 Mb.One switch, placed in the attic, have to be 8-port and the other switch and router/switch only have to be 4-ported. Switches don´t have to be managed.

while there are some gigabit routers out there, they're pricey.  I think you'd likely be better off just placing another gigabit switch in front of the router and connecting everything on your LAN to the router via it (unless you need internal routing rules).

This 8port gigabit switch is only $50 after rebate (limit 2).  My best advice is just to look for deals and grab things that are cheap when you see them.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833122111&CMP=AFC-Bensbargains

I've never used it though in general I link linksys.  Personally I like routers which can load third party (dd-wrt) firmware on them.  Gives you a lot of extra control, though it's geared a lot towards wireless these days.

DD-wrt also has an x86 package that lets you turn an old desktop into a very nice router.  Assuming you have an old box (maybe 600mhz and 512mb ram -- with a couple of gigabit nics thrown in), you can make a very nice router.

Your answer is interesting. "DD-wrt" doesn´t mean anything to me alas I´ve got very little or no knollidge about advanced network setup.

My son is into building a PC-router/switch by using a PIII 500/256MB RAM/5 gigabit NIC´s and presently he´s trying to find somebody who´s interesting in setting it all up. I think he´ll make it.

I thank you for your time. I hope my english frightens you (me being a Swede).

Greetings !
