Upgrade XP home-pro ethernet controller not installed

I have a Dimension 4600 which came with xp home.  I am upgrading to xp pro and got a blue screen so I went for a fresh install.  Now my network adapter says it is working but in device manager - other devices it shows Ethernet controller not installed (code 28).  Also shows Multimedia Audio Controller, PCI modem and USB controllers not installed but I thought I would fix the Ethernet first.

I have tried using the supplied driver disk but no success?

Has anyone heard of this type of problem?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

From the microsoft database I was reading, similar device problems were because of non compatable XP drivers. That doesn't make much sense since you had them working with XP home.

Controllers are chips and drivers are software. A driver acts like a translator between the device and programs that use the device. Controllers control the flow of information.

OK - so I have read that chipset drivers might be the problem but tried that.  (Also when I try the service tag numbers for the 5 computers I bought they do no show in the database.  They arrived over a week ago after being ordered June 5/04??)  I have uninstalled/reinstalled until my head is spinning.  This is just going around in circles.  When I did install the chipset drivers right after a fresh install the video settings corrected themselves but Ethernet, PCI, Audio, and USB controllers still have that lovely yellow question mark.  The Network Adapter icon show that it is working properly but the question mark contradicts.  Is there a difference between a controller and a driver?

If you can access the web with the computer then go to the website's of the network card and usb device manufacturers and download the XP drivers from there. Save them on the desktop, then go into device manager and install those drivers.

Hey Jokerswild - thanks for the help.  I am out of here for this night.  But this first time posting has been helpful.

Try posting this problem in the general hardware section, there are some regular users that check there with more knowledge of computers than I have. Thanks for being a teacher, I flunked english all 4 years of high school so  please forgive any gramatical errors I have made.

 Good luck, Gordon

Thanks for your reply,

By the way I am a teacher.  What a way to spend some of my summer holiday, getting these computers ready for school in Sept.

I have already tried downloading drivers from Dell website (to CD on another computer) and installing them. No progress.  Any other ideas - I might just wait until Monday to see if Dell's Tech help knows but I really would like to beat this problem tonight! <><
