usb adapter not connecting

I'm trying to connect a Linksys WUSB54G network adapter to a Linksys BEFW11S4 router. The router is only 802.11B, but supposedly the adapter is backward compatable. The adapter sees the network as available, but when I try to connect, it goes back and forth between two error messages.
All the signal strength lights are good, but it says, "You are connected to the access point, but the Internet cannot be found."
Then the lights die and the message is "Cannot associate with the access point." It does this in about 5-10 second intervals.
Any suggestions on where to go troubleshoot this would be appreciated,

Do you have any wireless security features enabled on the router (MAC address filtering, WEP or WPA encryption)?  If so, try disabling these features until you are sure the network is working, then re-enable them one at time making sure you consistent between the setup of the router and configuration of the network adapter.

That looks like a good place to start. This was an upgrade from a previous adapter so I could use WPA security. I may need to reset the router to factory specs and do a fresh install of everything just to be sure there's no hold-over settings mucking things up.

many thanks
