Generally, USB devices are supported natively by XP. If they aren't, then they're usually part of a download bearing the name "Dell System Software". But there isn't one for the 4600. Sometimes they may be missed if the Chipset Drivers aren't installed. They're necessary for all the integrated devices on the motherboard to be properly recognized.
Jim, thanks for those helpful links. I organized the driver files I need when reinstalling XP Pro, and burned them to a CD for future use. Appreciate your help. I'll look further into the USB Controller question.

You may find Dell's XP Reinstall Guide for the 4600 informative. See the section on installing hardware drivers for the list of what's needed for the 4600, and links for downloading them.
