Using a LAN under XP Home Edition

Can anyone give me a definitive statement about whether or not I can run my Dimension 4600 off a very small LAN under XP Home Edition.

I just want to share an internet broadband connection between 2 machines.  I have an ADSL modem and a router, and I have a cable from one port of the router into the Ethernet port of my Dimension 4600.

But the Dimension does not see the modem, there is no LAN Network icon under Network Connections (and I was unable to create one) and the new modem does not appear under Device Manager.

Do I really have to install Pro Edition in order to move forward ???  Looking at the Forum, it seems that this can be problemmatic.  I would much rather continue with Home Edition, if it were possible.

Absolutely not a problem to use XP Home within a LAN.  Sounds like either the Network Adapter is not properly installed or you have connected the 4600 to a port that is next to the uplink port on the router.  If you have done that, move the 4600 cable to another port.  The uplink port usually disables the port next to it.  Make sure you are using a standard ethernet cable and NOT a crossover cable.

Look at these reosurces for some detailed help:

Many thanks for the response.  You are right that the installation may not be complete/correct.

With the modem/router connected into the Ethernet port of my Dell, under 'Device Manager' / 'Other Devices' is 'Ethernet Controller'. Looking at the Properties of 'Ethernet Controller', it states that the drivers for the device are not installed (Code 28). Clicking 'Reinstall Driver' and inserting the XP Reinstallation CD, the driver cannot be found. Nor on the ResourceCD.

According to my Dimension 4600 specification sheet, I have an Integrated 10/100 Pro Ethernet Card installed. Is it unreasonable to expect the Ethernet Controller driver to be on the installation CD ?

I will be attempting to download the Ethernet Controller driver from Dell's web site tonight.

The driver is most definitely on the CD, now, finding it can be a chore. The downloads tab at the top of this page will hae the correct driver for you.
