I have charter cable as an ISP I have a modem that their charging me for, that is working fine on a computer in my office and I also have cable phone service in which it is operated by an Arris Telephony cable modem and it also has an ethernet connection on it. I thought that if i could use the ethernet connection on that I then wouldnt have to rent the one from charter. When you hook it up to the ethernet connection on the computer it will show that it is sending and recieving then it stops and pop-up that says you have low or no conectivity. (NOTE: I have disconnected the cable from the modem at the computer on the first modem) When I looked at the network connection details it will then show sending but not recieving. I went into cmd at run to reset the ip address and it also says that the ip cant reset. So I turned off the computer, disconnected the cable from the modem restarted went back to the cmd and it now shows no ip   000.000.000. hooked the cable back to the modem. type in ipconfig a new ip shows up. Thinking great exit out click on the internet explorer can not find page. I dont know. Now I talked to another guy and he explained that you cant use more than one modem per houshold and that you need a router and so on and I understand that. But I disconected the first modem form the cable so that shouldnt have interfered with the second modem from working,  right?

what is the MAC address? And will this allow me to use both modems or just the modem that operates the phone system?

Anyway thank you for taking the time to answer me, I appreciate it.

You need to call Charter and tell them you have your ownmodem.  They will ask for the MAC address and it should take about an hour or so, if that, for that address to register and sync up with their system.
I had Charter for the past fice years before we moved OCONUS and I used a Liksys cable modem for most of that time with no problem, unlike the cheap Motorola surfboard modem they "gave" me to use.

It appeasrs the MAC address has already tried to register within the system when I read your second post.  You need to power down everything and power up in this order.  Cable modem then the computer waiting about 1 minute for the modem to stabilize and obtain an IP Address from Charter.

The MAC address is a 12 digit hexi-decimal number printed on one of the lables of the modem and will look something like:

00-ad-o9-4f-00-ej  or something to that effect.  No other device in the world (except China) has that number.
