Using WAP security feature
Hello All,
I am currrently using a Linksys Router BEFW11SR Wireless. I am using the WEP Encryption feature. My question is the use of the new WAP feature. I understand that I will need a new Router supplying this feature, and, a patch from Microsoft. So, I see within my drop down menu withing WIN XP's Wireless tab in the Network area, that WAP is listed, so I guess nothing else from Microsoft is needed. I assume this is all I need at this point. Has anyone been using this is new WAP feature.

Ok I just noticed something using WPA, i will make a connection, that a minute or so, it will drop, then pickup again a few minutes later. Should I follow the threads regarding the Wireless zero tabs in XP ETC.

Hi Jmwills,
Well, per your message, I have applied the necessary patches to the router, the 1300 Wlan card from Dell and the mentioned Micrsoft WPA patch. Question, if I go the rouer, per Dell, and delete the Cards Drivers, they said that once I reboot, the Drivers will be applied again, they also said that I would not have to re-apply their WPA patch again. They said to go in to Device Manager, go to the Network tab, expand this and right click on the 1300 card, hit delete and reboot.
Do you agree with this?
Like I said, WEP works fine. Do you have WPA working? If so, I would like to go over your router and land card options that you have enabled.
Thanks
Al

Yes, use the Zero configuration utility to make your card home in on the connecton and not wander off.
I had rather see you unistall the adapter than deleting it, but 6 of 1 12 of another, I guess. Yes, I have several customers WPA with no probems but all with Linksys integrated gear, that is one thing I insist on, although I don;t mind using Netgear products either.

Hi Jmwills,
The Threads from the Network forum regardinng dropping connections, it is stated to Disable the WZC.
Another item here, as I stated, I have an SSID that WEP works fine with. I am using this same SSID, and want to use the WPA. I made all the needed changes to the Linksys router, shared key name etc. Then also made the changes to the 1300 Wlan card. I do have the box checked were it says 'Use windows to configure my wireless network settings'. Should I keep this enabled?? Also, I see the SSID (when using WPA) In the preferred box, and I assume it should be in the available network screen, correct. Because thi sis one of my problesm, it does not display in the available network box.

JmWills,
I spoke with a Linksys rep today. Apparently my WPA no connections problem, is due to having my SSID in the router disabled. He said I needed to enable it, and recreate my SSID again, then after the connection, i can disable the ssid broadcast. Well it is working, but only when SSID is broadcasting. So I have to call them back to se if this is suppose to work.

I guarantee you that disabling SSID will work or else why would Linksys give you the ability to disable it? Think about it. The tech rep did not kno what he was talking about.
Review everything we have talked about particularly resetting everyting and do one step at a time while checking connectivity at every step.

Hi,
Thanks for both of your responses. Yes, I did realize that is using WPA, the WZC cannot be turned off.
Thanks again,

Hello Jmwils,
I just wanted to update you on something. In regards to the enable and disable of the SSID broadcasts on the Linsksys routers. I posted this to the area regarding Subject- connections are dropping. Microsoft Article KB811427, specifically addresses this. It is the XP WZC facility
that, when disabling the SSID, if there are other router's in your neighborhood, and they are broadcasting their SSID, the WZC will try to connect to one. It is a very interesting article, apparently, this is working as designed.

Jim,
You wrote 'a setting to disallow a broadcast to associate with your card'
I read the Linksys article you reference, but cannot figure out what exacly you are saying.
In the Linksys router, you either enable or disable SSID broadcast. According to the linksys Rep and reading the Microsoft article, I cannot see how, if routers are in the area (neighboorhood), how you can disable SSID broadcast, and successfully use WAP

The best I rememebr is that the card sees all of the LANS available but if yourconfigure WZC correctly, it will only associate with the ones you allow. I can ride the street in our subdivision and log onto 5 different wireless LANS just becasue I know the name of the SSID and people rarely chnage the passwords associated with default SSID's.
Stopping the Broadcasting an SSID does not mean it can not be seeen, it just does not tell you the name of the SSID although I can see the MAC addresses of non broadcasted SSID's. This thread has gone on long enough for me.
Thanks to all.
