V.44 Compression-- Worth Upgrading Modem?

Hello Dellsters, My new dial up ISP supports V.92/V.44 data compression. I am currently using a V.90/V.32 Dell supplied Lucent modem in a 2002 vintage Dimension 8200. I currently get no better than 40Kbps, and that it during off peak hours. Will dropping in a new V.92/V.44 modem make a noticable difference in download speed? TIA, JJO

It may or may not. *If it does* it will be because it handles your line impairmemt better and gives you a higher connect rate. V.44 can acheive a higher compression but unless you download large uncompressed files you won't notice the difference.

Another benefit of V.92 is its Modem on Hold feature... IF your ISP has that enabled....

Having said that, I'd personally leave it as is.... Connecting in the 40s with an OEM modem would be heaven for many people. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I put a Diamond Supramax V.92/V.44 in my machine with an ISP service listing V.90 and my connection is either 50.6 or 52.0kps.  For only $29.95 it might pick your speed up?  My previous V.90 by USR would give me 48kps at best.
