verizon actiontec router

I have an inspiron 600 lap top that I am having frequent internet connectivity problems...i now have verizon fios service and the verizon tech tells me that my laptop needs a "fix" to connect to an IP address starting with something other 169... like 168 or 192...is there a fix for this or does someone know how to "force" an IP that will stick?  Thank you.

Thank you for your response.  No...the verizon tech did not give me an address to force.  He was saying that the yellow triangle/exclamation mark by the internet/computer monitor icon was a software/connectivity glitch.  Therefore, even though the computer says it has excellent signal strength, it reads "limited or no connectivity" to the internet.

did the Verizon tech say that you need to have a static IP to connect? if yes, and if you have been given one by them, then go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet connections -> Network Connections. right-click on Local Area Connection (or Wireless Network Connection if its wireless that you are trying to set up) and click Properties. on the properties window select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and click Properties. then enter the IP address, default gateway and DNS server addresses that have been given to you

oh limited or no connectivity? so i reckon you are constantly getting a 169.254.x.x IP?

one of the main reasons for this is an incorrect network key. is it a secured network that you are connecting to? if so ensure that you are entering the right key. if the network is unsecured then you may want to try the following
  • Powercycle the network i.e. shut the modem, router and the system off, wait for a minute, power the modem back on, wait for a minute and power the router back on, wait for another minute and power up the system
  • Refresh drivers Go to device manager (Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc -> OK), scroll down to network adapters and uninstall all network adapters(except 1394 net adapter) by right-clicking and Uninstall. Reboot the system
  • Update drivers Depending on your wireless adapter(as per device manager) go to support.dell.com and download the latest driver for the card and install it

also please post the make and the model number of the modem/router given to you by Verizon (i think Verizon gives an Actiontec for their fios services?)

The router is secured...last night with the verizon tech, i removed the WEP and then re-entered it with no success...you are right on two accounts...it is a 169. address and it is an Actiontec..I'm not at home but the model number is something like m424wr.

try the three steps in my prev post...also see if it connects without any security. that will tell us if the wireless card is having any trouble negotiating the encyption

and when you are home...please post the model of the router and the wireless card

Actually what you need to do is reset your TCP/IP Stack. Follow the instructions or XP and see if this article helps.

This is all somewhat odd.  I have the 1505 with the Pre N card and the Actiontec router from Verizon.  I connected on the first try...However, I did change the security to WPA and added my own password.  Booted up the 1505 and entered the Network name and password and have been online ever since.   One thing you might try, that I was taught by technicians at Buffalo Technologies.  Open your command prompt and type:  ipconfig /flushdns...then ipconfig /release  and finally ipconfig /renew

A manual way to repair your connection.

You might also run the firmware upgrade for the router:

If that doesn't work...and you don't have FIOS TV...you can probably use your old router.  Have Verizon release the IP and then fire up your router with FIOS and it should work.   Many have chosen to do that.  The only need for the Actiontec router is for FIOS TV Guide.

Thanks to all who have responded with helpful ideas...this Actiontec router (model # WI424WR) some how must reset itself.  The simple solution was to unplug the power, wait a minute and power back up.  The router reset itself and the IP address changed from a 169 to the needed 192! ?? The Verizon tech was on the phone with me for 30 minutes running diagnostics...having me do everything except reboot the router.  Which, by-the-way, I have FIOS for internet and TV and I regularly have to reboot the individual boxes...it is like a satellite system where each TV has it's own box and it's become quite a pain because there is always a problem and Verizon has no answers... just excuses...unless something dramatic happens, when my year is up I'll be moving back to the cable company.  Thank you again for all who responded.

"I regularly have to reboot the individual boxes"

They must be running Windows on those boxes. :smileyvery-happy:

I does sound like a part time job.

None of the services are 100%, you just have to choose which one is the least painful to deal with.

I have had great service and use of Verizon, but do not use their TV service, just HS Internet and Phone.
