Very Slow Internet Access

Machine is a week old Dimension E520 & have had connection problems from the start. Internet provider is BT Broadband accessed by a router(have a choice of 2 to try) Internet access is fine on old P4 PC. Initial problem was a network cable unplugged error message when using my Voyager Router. Swapped over to BT Hub & internet was great for a day or so then either got the unplugged cable message or very slow connection. Now the BT Hub won't connect at all. Things I have tried: tried different connection speeds in the Network connection settings - made no difference Fitted my old network card - made no difference Downloaded drivers for Intel NIC - made no difference Ran diagnostic tests for Intel NIC: This flags up that no WINS server is available for this connection & ping network 192.168.1.255 failed Ran WinSockFix The whole PC seems to run slower when network cable is connected. Can anyone offer some advice on what to try next? thanks in advance

Please connect you system via the Ethernet and go to Start > Run and type cmd. Once the command box appears type ipconfig /all and then post the results here.

Thanks for reply but I think I've got it sorted now.
I have uninstalled McAffee & installed Norton. PC & Internet access are now superfast.

Dell must ship 1000's of PC's every day with McAffee installed, so why I get a problem I don't really know. Thankfully its sorted & I can hopefully just get on with enjoying my Core 2 Duo performance!

I also have an e520, brand new, with slow internet speeds. I have had the cable company out here to look at it, and they've found nothing wrong on their end. There are times it's fine, but it's normally painfully slow. My machine also came with McAfee. Has this been identified as the source of the problem?

All I can tell you is as soon as I removed McAffee internet speed was back to normal. This was not on the advice of Dell, just from my investigations. Since installing Norton anti-virus everything has been fine. regards

Yes, you can have only 1 security center running on your system. If you have it will crawl slower than a turtle. Glad you got it fixed.

I realise that, but the problem was there from new with the PC as shipped from Dell. I had to remove McAffee to have a usable internet connection.

My problem is now resolved as well. I removed McAfee and bought and installed Norton 360. It's been smooth sailing ever since...
