Vista and hidden SSID's

Hey everyone,

I have a E1505, Intel Duo Core 2 2GHz processor, 2GB ram, and a Dell Wireless 1500 Draft N wireless card.  I am using Vista Home Premium's wireless utility and have been having issues with my home network which uses a hidden SSID and WPA-TKIP.

Once I connect to my network I'm usually fine, but if I disconnect for any reason and try to reconnect again I cannot locate my home network.  I try disabling the adapter, creating a new network profile (which it tells me there is one already created and to use that one instead), and resetting the router.  None of these things work.  I have a Dell 5150 running XP home with a Netgear PCI card that connects to the same network each and every time like a champ.

I am new to Vista, and have never used Windows' built in wireless utilities before because they always gave me issues.  I'm sure that I'm missing a setting or just unfamiliar with Vista's functions, so if anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

I may have to poke around in the options, because I think that is what I am missing is the reconnection.  Getting it connected again usually consists of me having to log into the router from another computer, turning on SSID broadcast, connecting, then turning it off again...a real pain.  Is there a setting that I'm missing?

In Vista built in Wireless controls you can add a connection to a wireless router even if that SSID is hidden. It will stay in your wireless "list" even after you disconnect. You can also have it auto-reconnect when it drops.

What you should do is set up your profile manually. There are are two boxes that should be checked off they are:
  1. Start this connection Manually
  2. Connect even if the network is not broadcasting

If you make sure these are checked off you should not have a problem.
