To help troubleshoot this problem, on the computer with the problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.
I sent Steve the "run" from the command. Yes, my office knows I am trying to switch my existing internet connection/service, that I am paying for, from one computer to the other. I did try going thru the regular connection wizard right from the start. It asked for my user name and password given to me by my IP, I do not have such a thing and asked the office manager who says NO we dont't have this. I tried putting in the existing IP addresses, DNS numbers, default gateway stuff, anything that the desktop has. no luck. The connection was made in some fashion and put into the network connections yet it would not go thru when clicked to connect. It really seems that it starts and then get held up.
So, yes I did try all routes except the one that works. The wizard on this dell wanted stuff that my Gateway laptop or HP desktop didnt want.
JMWills has responded with something I want to be clear on, I am trying to move one existing connection to the other computer, and will remove the first computer from the network. I am not trying to run two computers on the same connection or IP numbers or anything.
I am just trying to use a laptop at work and take my desk top home. I thought I could just go in and connect.
And I did try the regular connection wizard process. see my reply to jmwills.
am I blocking something by having an initial dial up connection set up before moving to broadband?
Another thought is I have not tried to connect to any wireless networks, I can ty that and see if they are blocked also.

There could be a whole host of reaosn why this is not conencting at your workplace. Does your employer know you are doing this?
Assuming the employer has no objections, run the ipconfig /all command as Steve suggested but also run thru the network connection wizard.

Assuming you mean in the network sharing center window, the network discovery and the file sharing is on.
should the public folder be on?
