Vostro 460 Network card not found Code 31 need to reboot 3 to 4 times

I have 10 Vostro 460s, the network cards are not being found on startup.  You have to reboot the systems 3-4 times to get Windows to find the Network cards.  All drivers are up to date.  This may be related to a Windows update, since the machine were fine for a month or so until an Update came out.

It is unfortunate as this problem does seem like a manufacturing defect, but I'm sure the bean counters at Dell have a detailed database of user complaints over the lifetime of the product. Those numbers likely ended up to be a small percentage of failures during the warranty period so they chose not to offer any "extended" support after the period was up. Events occurring afterwards were chalked up as luck of the draw. I don't think any manufacturer is immune to these types of problems as nothing is truly perfect. You would think though to protect their corporate image that they would have been able to find the money in their budget to send out some PCI-e Ethernet cards for customers affected beyond the warranty period, but business is business. If your car transmission konks out 100 km after the warranty period is up, should the car maker repair it for free? It may have started acting a little wonky under warranty, but it decided to give up the ghost right after. In this case considering the fix is a cheap ethernet card they have decided that cost shouldn't break the bank for customers even though it may lessen their buying experience in the long run. I'm no expert in actuarial science, but I'm sure they have expert consultants that they rely upon to help decide on matters. If not enough red flags get triggered they likely don't take any drastic action and take the small losses that may occur.

Look what I found today... an article from 2011 that details the problems with Sandy Bridge motherboard along with a list of manufactures that recalled them... including Dell and the Vostro 460! Shame on Dell for not contacting me about this when they obvious knew of the problem. And double shame for refusing to replace a board that has a known manufacture defect when contacted about the problem. http://www.geek-news.net/2011/02/complete-sandy-bridge-recall-list.html

Just had the same disappearing NIC issue with a Vostro 460, which is sitting beside a Precision 390 that's been running well for almost a decade.

Problem so far always occurs after return from sleep, and corrects for a time after draining power (unplug, power on, replug).

Choosing to add PCIe NIC (Intel CT GbE) to bypass internal one.

There was a known problem with Sandy Bridge motherboards, but it is related to SATA 2 ports rather than the internal NIC.

what a bios version you have ?   Got this problem after update the bios. So try to downgrade bios, if you still interested.
