Vostro & XP Pro means no wireless??
Hi Everyone,
My brother-in-law is setting up a small business and he asked me to set up the computers. He will be needing approx 6 to 8 computers to start with. I recommended to him the inspiron 530s line and the parent company recommended the Vostro slim line. They also recommended XP pro which my brother in law already uses and likes where as I love the vista. When I went to spec out Vostros it won't let you have XP pro and any wireless card. Vostro wireless cards will only work with vista. Why?
But when I spec out the inspiron 530s which is also slim I can get XP pro & wireless. What I don't understand is that the vostro just looks like a striped down version of the inspiron. So I take it that if he still wants the XP pro I will have to hardwire all the computers into an ethernet hub and hardwire it to the modem?
Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?
Thank you
Rick

I have no idea. I can only assume that it's an errror with their compatibility checker. Either that, or dell is trying to incentive sales of vista.
I wouldn't hold out much hope of a fix either. A few years ago I could buy a particular server Operating System if I selected faster clocked ram. Dell completely ignored my pleas to get that one fixed :D
About all I can suggest is to check back occassionally and see if they're allowing it.
Of course, you could always add the wireless cards on your own after you purchase...

BTW, you can always phone Dells sales and ask them about adding a component that isn't listed...

DeathRider, it's not fixed for me.
To replicate the problem, goto Dell Small Buisiness and pick the Vostro 200 (slim) line. Customize the base package. Select XP Pro and select the Internal G wireless card.
I get this compatibility error message:
Your Wireless selection requires a Windows® Vista Operating System. To fix this issue please click on the highlighted words to be directed to the appropriate section to modify your selections.
edit: In the past when I've tried, Dell sales has faced the same limitations that I've had on the website (same system?) though they have been willing to lie about being able to do something.

Do the slims still require half height cards?
If so, might as well get them separately,
Many cards are low profile, just make sure it comes with a low profile back plate.
or external USB wireless adapters.
