you have an internal wireless card.  if the hotel offers wireless internet, you'll be fine.  i would update the drivers on the card when you get it though -- the older ones for your card aren't the best

hotels with high speed internet usually offer it in 1 of 2 ways.

1) wireless:  hotels will have access points that enable wireless access in most if not all rooms.  you will use your wireless card. the hotel will have specific instructions about what you need to do to connect to their network (it varries).  if you don't have the latest drivers on your 600m (there's a lag time), you can get the latest drivers for your wireless card here:  http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R104002.EXE   this card has issues with anything but the latest drivers, so it's worth the upgrade

2) wired:  each room will have an ethernet wall jack.  you will need to connect your laptop's ethernet port to this walljack via a standard cat5 (or cat5e or cat6) ethernet patch cable.  some hotels provide this cable, some do not.  retail stores like best buy and the like tend to rip you off on these cable prices, buy online if possible.

that's about it.  as always, when you first get your computer, download all windows critical updates.  also make sure to keep current on your antivirus software.  AVG offers free AV software if you ever need some.

Sounds great. I do have a second computer at home so will i need a wireless card installed on my second computer to run it off the wireless router?

The netgear item you bought is a wireless router.  If you have high-speed internet in a place like your house, it will enable you to share that internet connection between multiple computers.  So say you have 3 computers at home.  You could plug some into the netgear router and some could connect wirelessly -- if the netgear router was in turn plugged into a cable or DSL modem, all your computers would have high-speed internet.

Concerning your hotel trip, if the hotel offered wired jacks in your room, I suppose you could plug the router into the wall jack and thus have wireless access in your room.  Depending on the hotel's network setup though, things might need some extra configuring

the computer can plug in directly if it has an ethernet card or port.  alternatively it can connect wirelessly with a wireless card.

again though, unless you have high speed internet in your home, there's not really a good reason to connect everything

Yes i have high speed internet. Ultimately i wanted to have a computer upstairs without having to run cords down to my other computer. Is that what this NETGEAR WGR614 54MBPS WIRELESS  router will do for me?

check the modem and make sure that it can connect with ethernet (some are USB only).  if it can, you're pretty much set.  read the instructions that come with the router and post back any questions you have.

on the computer that is not working, when it is connected to the router, click start, click run, type CMD and press ok.  the type IPCONFIG /all and paste back the results
