Want to go wireless-how?

I currently have a Dell Dimension 5100 and just ordered a Inspiron E1505 (comes with Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps)). I have Comcast cable for the internet. I want to set up a wireless connection for both computers. What do I need to buy to do it?

First, you need to make sure that your cable modem can connect by ethernet.  If it can only connect by USB, you will need a modem that can connect by ethernet.   Next you will need a wireless router.  802.11 b/g models from Linksys, Netgear, or D-Link should work just fine.   Normally it is a good idea to have at least one computer that connects to the router by ethernet (so you can troubleshoot the wireless connection if there are problems).   Thus, if your Dimension 5100 is located near the cable modem and router, it would be best to connect it to the router by ethernet.  Nearly all wireless routers have 4 ethernet ports.   The new laptop should be able to connect by wireless so long as it is within range of the wireless signal.

Note that there is little sense in getting high speed (108 Mbps, SuperG, Pre-N, etc.) wireless routers, as they wil not improve internet speed, and generally only provide the higher speed if the wireless network adapter and router are from the same manufacturer.

this router should work nicely for your notebooks...i have it ,,,it works great, and the wirless works nicely on my inspiron 6400

agree with volcano 11, if you go with a 108 mbps router, then you will have to get the adpater cards , one for each notebook...i had thought about it, but decided not to do it...

also , i would stay away from pre-n, since there is still not a stanard for that spec....hopefully soon, maybe this winter.
