Way confused: Integrated NIC Ethernet Controller?

My Latitude 8000 has an integrated NIC/Modem.  Standard connections next to each other on the right side.  However, I can not get the NIC to work or be recognixed.  Control Panel and Hardware show no presence of an Ethernet Controller and in trying to Add a device, Ethernet Controller is not an option.

???

Thanks

Todd

I cant do the scan as I cant connect to the network becuase I cant get the card to be recognized ;^)

I have about 12 systems, my profile will not show each I dont think.

Service tag: H9SZG01

Thanks!

Todd,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Please update your Dell Community Forum profile with the service tag of the system in question.  I can then tell you exactly what hardware came on the system. You can also perform a hardware scan to determine if the network card is present.

  1. Go to the main support site.
  2. Click the Current Configuration link.
  3. Accept the agreement to perform the scan.

Thanks Bob.    Leaves me a little confused.  There is a full-fledged network connection port, right next to the modem port.  Does what you are saying mean they all come with the port hole there, just not activated some how?

Todd,

It is not recommended to post your service tag.  I have had a customer list multiple service tags in their profile separated by commas.  I believe there were seven systems listed.

I only found a modem included in the system order.  For a network port, you should seek a PCMCIA or USB 1.1 solution (The system was produced prior to Mach 2003).

Todd,

The plastic shell for the system cannot be changed.  There is a basic configuration, only the hardware behind the port can change depending on how the system was configured.  I looked again for a network card and did not see one.  The solution here would be to get a PCMCIA or USB (version 1.1) card to enable this capability.

Strangely simple.  Thanks for the help!

To verify you only have the modem card and not the NIC/modem combo, look here and if there is a loose 12-wire connector in the area of or under the mini-PCI board, then you only have the modem (just the 2-wire connector hooked up).  The first pic shows the combo card with both connectors on it.  You could get this card as I did (they had 3 before I ordered!    ).

John,

Thanks.  You are 100% correct.  12 connector off - no combo card.  Silly customer: just cause there's a NIC connector hole doesnt mean its actuallu active ;^)  Ordered the part, now they only have 1.

On the notebooks that did not have the card at all, both the NIC and modem connectors had a plastic plug covering them - on the modem only (like my 4000 origionally), the NIC connector was covered.
