Webbrowser don't display colors

Hi, this problem was mentioned before, but when I followed the advise of how to resolve it (e.g. resetting browser settings, deleting search history,...), it didn't help:

I just got my new XPS m140 two weeks ago, and from the beginning on when I used Internet Explorer the background colors weren't displayed (which sometimes doesn't let me see buttons or graphics as well). Also, the whole format of the website is disarranged, and even when I change the text size in the "view" tab to "smallest", it's still way too large (looks like Arial 20 or 24).

I downloaded Firefox, and the text size and the formatting are fine, but there is still the problem with the background color and the display of buttons/some graphics. (One example for the missing display of graphics: My email website usually tells me how much storage space I have left, and it shows this with a colored bar; I can neither see the bar nor the colors; also, it shows me the folders and the # of messages in a table, but the table grid lines are not visible.)

Does anyone know how to deal with that?

Thanks for any help!

Even though I do not have the Media edition here, if you provide me with one or two URL(s) I could try to see if I understand the problem

How does each look if you change your resolution to the lowest possible numbers and make the color depth the maximum (for mine it is 24-bit)?

When I visit the website http://www.mercycorps.org/ , I cannot see any background colors - the website is white with black and blue writing and some (color) pictures. The drop-down menu doesn't seem to have a background which makes it hard to read, it shows only a blue font which overlaps with the writing and pictures on the website.

Another example is http://web.lesley.edu/default.asp Usually there is a picture on a grey background (as far as I remember). All I can see is a white website with blue links on the left side.

I hope my descriptions are not too confusing...

Thanks for any help!!

Changing the resolution doesn't change the display of the website. I somehow get the feeling it could have to do with layers - it's the same when you use powerpoint and send items in the background so that everything which is underneath can be seen, but not the item any more.

I actually just tried it out with powerpoint, and found out that I have the same problem there - I cannot see the color when I fill an object; when I use color schemes or design templates, the slide still appears white. On the other hand, when I use the slide-show view instead of the "normal view", I can see all the colors that I added. So it really seems that it has to do with the computer or screen settings, not the browser settings, I just have absolutely no clue what I could change...

As a troubleshooting test, how about changing the color depth to somehing rediculously low (possibly lowest setting) and then work back from there?
Is it a Dell flat panel monitor?
If so, I assume the special software for the flat panel is installed.
With ours (which can pivot) there is special FP software (blue CD) which may need to be installed separately.

Wow,
in the case of the second, I actually prefer the text-only

The XPS m140 is a laptop with a 14.1" screen; it was delivered without any special software cd's. I tried to change different settings and do a troubleshooting test, but didn't get any results. I may have overlooked something... I'll try to find someone who knows more about computers than I do to do the tests you suggested and get back when I know more. Thanks a lot for your help!

I found a solution for this problem, though not the most elegant one: I created a new user-account, and all of a sudden both webbrowser (Firefox and Explorer) show the background colors. In addition to that, internet explorer also is correctly formatted and doesn't have these strange font sizes any more. Now I only have the problem of how to transfer all my data and my programs to the new user account, but I'm sure there will be an easy solution.

Thanks again for your help!

Your login needs administrator rights, after which you should be able simply to establish a desktop shortcut to your old "Documents and Settings" login ID folder to get all your data.
