webmail problems

I uninstalled Norton, and it gave me a ton of problems.  I've since learned that because of this software, it does not completely uninstall.  Internet Explorer no longer allows me to use any kind of webmail, nor does it allow me to use the Yahoo Messenger.  It does not even recognize the yahoo webpage as if it does not exist.  With the other webmail pages (hotmail, juno, etc), it allows me to enter my addresses and passwords, but once I hit the enter button it does take me back to the login page as if I never entered anything in.   Everything else in Internet Explorer seems to work well with no other problems.  I've looked in my settings and they are all correct just as they should be.  I've uninstalled all my yahoo programs and reinstalled them, hoping it would help the situation.  I even upgraded IE to the new version 7 hoping it would also help but it did not.    I was given a suggestion by a computer friend to download a small file from the Norton webpage to wipe out the rest of the leftover files Norton leaves behind when uninstalled.  I did this and I am guessing it got rid of those files.  However, it didn't correct the webmail problem.  I'm just trying everything I can without having to go the drastic mode of having to back everything up and restoring the computer.  I have a lot on it!   Any ideas? I should mention that I had once tried doing a system backup but this did not work.  I have no idea why.  I have done one before in the past and had been successful before but this time it didn't work at all.  Kept me in the same state that I began in before I started the system restore.    Help!
