Here are a few suggestions that I have to get things started.

How to by-pass the Dell Download Manager

Setup should look like...

Wall > ISP Modem/Router > Wireless router(if any) > Wired/wireless

If using DSL, a DSL Filter MUST be on ALL devices, phone, answering machine, faxes, etc..., everything EXCEPT the DSL Modem/Router.

You may share a DSL Filter.

Wall > DSL Filter > Splitter > Multiple Devices

How to login to your wireless router

Recommended Wireless Router Settings

Actually WPA2-PSK(TKIP) Personal Security is the way to go but not all wireless devices will work with WPA2. So this is why we are currently sticking with WPA-PSK(TKIP) Personal Security.

How to repair a connection

Sometimes connections fail due to power flickers. Try turning off your ISP Modem/Router, your wireless router and your computer for 60 seconds, then restart them and see if you can connect. Usually this happens during electrical storms and when there are power interuptions. Doing this resets everything back and then the connection resumes as normal.

Most Dell Laptops use the blue Fn and F2 to turn the wireless card on/off. Some have a switch. Dell QuickSet helps to control the hotkeys.

Wireless N Routers

There are different types of Wireless N Routers, just Wireless N and Dual Band Wireless N Routers.

Wireless N brodcasts on 5.8gh range.

Wireless b/g broadcasts on the 2.4gh range.

***Unless you have a dual band Wireless N router, all the computers on your network will need a Wireless N Card/Adapter or they will not be able to connect to your network.***

Cordless phones

Cordless phones that are 2.4GHz use the same frequencies that wireless roiuters use(A,B,G)

Cordless phones that are 5.8GHz use the same frequencies that wireless routers use(N)

Using a cordless phone can and will interfere with your connection.

Tweak that wireless card

Windows has a feature that turn off the wireless card to save power. Here is how to keep the wireless card from turning off.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

If you have problems with installing drivers/software in Windows 7, the try installing the drivers in the compatibility mode.

Right click on the setup.exe file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to Vista. Then install the proper drivers.

Please report broken links or inaccurate information to dell_forums@dell.com.

Thank you.

After a clean installation of the Operating System the Wireless doesn't work.

This is usually caused because the drivers were not installed and/or not in the proper order.

The Desktop/Notebook System Utility needs to be installed first and then the Chipset Drivers or the other drivers will NOT install.

Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

If Upgrading to Windows 7

The desktop/notebook system utility and the chipset drivers first? If not the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order If you cannot find Windows 7 drivers, then try using the Vista (or XP) 32-bit drivers, for Windows 7 32-bit of the Vista (or XP) 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit and install the drivers in the Compatibility mode

:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

I do not know does any person have a happy experience in here?

I could not install org XP software&resource CD. the welcom told me that  need to download  it. my one year desktop could not connect to internet.

I try to connect dell download center to download all drivers again.

I enter server TAG  and get 51 files. I choose downloader manager ( recommand) but I could not save to my folder and ask me to run it ( or uninstall)

I do not see any paper/instruction to reinstll/recover   that step/by step.

I got this computer  with some issue at first month. dell support can fixed. after over 1 month, user is not able to reinstall org CD to recover system.

I saw this community. it seem user coulod not simple reinstall it. welcome message discover it as install order. However, I did not see any order  during reinstall driver/utility  CD.

any person could tell me for this point?

Thanks

Jimmy

Jimmy,

i selected the dowload manager, chipset stuff and networking for my latitude c840 after changing the hard drive and reinstalling windows xp - but my broadcom 1350 wlan still didnt work or even be recognized. as it had before the drive crashed

i spent hours searching then finnally found this site http://www.pcpitstop.com/drivers/manufacturer/broadcom.html

downloaded the pack my for brcm 1350 drivers, installshield ran, it rebooted, and bam - internal wifi card worked immediatly

i dont know why such a solution was so hard to find, a driver pack for a hardware device should be a simple user friendly experience
