What else do I need?

I have A Dimension 8300 Windows XP Home Edition with an Intel(R)537EPV9xDFPCI Modem, and an Intel(R)PRO/100VE Network Card. The other computer has nothing as far as networking.
In the device manager under modem it lists
HSP56 Micromodem
Standard 1200bps Modem
Standard 1200bps Modem #2
What do I need to purchase to setup a network on these two pcs?

Thanks

What kind of network are planning on setting up?  Do you plan to share an internet connection?  If so, what kind of internet connection will you be sharing (dsl/cable/dialup)?  What do you plan on doing with the network?  Does the other computer have an ethernet network adapter?  (Except for internet connections, modems have little to do with networking).

I want to setup so the Dimension 8300 is the host for an internet connection for the other. I would prefer to use cables instead of wireless. The other pc has no network devices at all, I believe it does have an available PCI slot if that helps, or is USB adapters better? I believe the Dimension 8300 is ready to go. I am not interested in file sharing, but maybe sharing the printer. I am totally new to networking, and I thank you for your response.

You will need an ethernet network card for the other computer and a special network cable, called a cross-over cable.  You should be able to find a PCI 10/100 network card for less than $10, and a cross-over cable will cost about $10 or so, depending on length.   Connect the two network cards together with the cross-over cable, then enable Internet Connection Sharing on the computer that makes the dialup connection.  I recommend using the 8300 for making the internet connection.  Windows XP's impletmentation of Interent Connection is easier to use than previous versions of Windows.  Once you get the internet to work on both computers, post back if you need further help on sharing files and sharing printers.  Also visit www.homenethelp.com  for a ton of useful information.

Hey Steve,
When I run the network wizard on my 8300, I get this message "Some of this computer's  network hardware is still disconnected. Before you can continue, you must either plug in or otherwise connect all of your hardware, or select "Ignore disconnected networking hardware." I get this message from both computers.
I believe I may have bought the wrong cable. I bought a Category 5e Patch from Dell. If so I will repin it.
Thanks for yor help,
rgoodson

A network patch cable will not work.  You need a cross-over cable that has the send and receive pins reversed on each end.

I repinned the cable, had it working great, then it just quit, as far as an inrenet sharing connection. Still trying to figure it out.
