What's going on here with AIM?

I have a 600m w/ the 2100 wireless card and my roommate has a G4 powerbook.  We are both connected to the internet through my Truemobile 1184.  For no explainable reason, AIM stops working intermentently and neither of us can connect.  What makes this so weird is that the internet works just fine (as you can see since I'm typing this message).  This happened a few days ago where we could connect but then it would almost instantaneously stop working as if we had lost the connection to the internet.  Eventually it started working but it has happened again today and we can't connect at all.  I am at a loss as to what to do, and it looks like there is no mention of the 1184 on Dell's support site anymore.

any chance you're at school?   my wonderful school (go dartmouth) has, as of this year, made its rather expensive packet shaper de-prioritize AIM in the extreme.  the result being that it won't connect at random times and can also be rather slow at times

just a thought

As a matter of fact I'm at Emory...so that could be a possibility.  As of this year we also lost the ability to connect to the Gnutella network disabling Kazaa, Limewire, etc on campus....
