Do you have a D-Link router?  If so, this is the typical runaround.  If you have equipment from 2 different vendors, each vendor blames the other for problems encountered when the devices don't appear to work with each other.  Perhaps if you tell us more about your network setup (how everything is connected, version of Windows running on all machines, models of network cards, etc.) and a better description of the problem you having, we can provide some help.

I'm having similar problems with the Inspiron 9100 I just received yesterday.  I have three other laptops all running through a D-Link 514 router with no problems at all.  Each one fired up right out of the box.  The Dell won't do wireless at home or at work, although it will work when I hardwire it to the D-Link router.  I went to Dell Support online and followed the instructions for connecting to a Windows XP network http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1082837

When I got to "step 5. Click the Wireless Networks tab", I didn't have a wireless tab, so I followed the instructions for adding that tab http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1077717&c=us&l=en&s=eep&cs=2231

I went through that routine twice and rebooted each time, but it doesn't add the tab I need.  I'm at a loss for what to try next, and when I called the 800 number last night, I stayed on hold until I finally gave up.  Any help or ideas will be GREAT!

bigEdr,

Does the wireless network card show up in device manager without indicating any problems?  Does the wiereless adapter show up in Network Connections and is it enabled?  Have you connected the router to any other computers through a wired connection to see if it works, and if so, have you changed any of the wireless settings on the router from their default values (such SSID broadcast, MAC address restrictions, or Encryption)?  Do not set any of these until you get the wireless connection working.

If the wireless network card shows up without problems in Device Manager and also shows up in Network Connections, make sure the TCP/IP properties are set to obtain an IP address automatically, then see if it is doing so by right clicking on the wireless connection in Network Properties and choosing Status from the drop-down menu, then clicking on the Support tab.  You should see an IP address assigned by the router in the range 192.168.xxx.xxx.  Report back what you find.

Mdewesse,

Your problem may be different and it gets very difficult and confusing to deal with 2 people's problems in the same thread.  Please start a new thread (rather than replying to an existing thread) so that someone can start helping with your problem in a less confusing manner.

bigEdr,

I don't know if this is relevent, but you might need to make sure the security settings are manually set the same for both the router and the computer. My 5150 didn't work out of the box until I matched the wireless card's security settings to that being used by my router. Also, it wasn't showing any signal strength until I matched the settings; i wish it could configure itself automatically at times ... :)

PS: One mistype of the WEP key or index# and nada...

Mike.

Same suggestion if you are using the passphrase method of generating a wep key - different manufacturers use different methods of generating the key resulting in different characters for the same wordphrase.  Make up a key using 0-9 and A-F randomly.

I agree with the above..it has been the number one source of my problems with my DLINK routers...Set both units to OPEN connection and turn off firewalls until you insure they are working...then turn on firewalls and set the encryptions on both units, Router and adaptor.
