WiFi Configuration Question, Please Help
Hi, new to wifi so this is probably a stupid question. Running E310 desktop and Inspiron 6000 on wifi using cable internet and Netgear wireless router. The way this is all configured now, the cable from the wall goes to the modem, the modem connects to the router, the router connects to the E310 and a wireless USB LAN adapter also connects to the E310. Is this correct? To me, a newbie at networking, it seems like the E310 is connected to the network twice, once through the ethernet cable to the router and again through the LAN adapter. Am I correct? There are two connection icons in the systray, the LAN and the wireless network icons. Please help, thanks.

If your E310 is close enough to the router to connect using a wired ethernet connection, then there is no need to use the wireless USB adapter. The wired ethernet connection is more reliable and is also necessary to troubleshoot the wireless part of the network if there is a problem with the wireless network. The only reason you would need to use the wireless USB network adapter on the E310 is if it were located too far away from the router to make a wired connection inconvient. In short, you don't need the USB wireless adapter connected to the E310 in its current setting and you would be better off unplugging it. Presumably the Inspiron will be connecting through wireless and you can move the Inspiron all over the house and still stay connected through wireless.
