Hi,
Could you Try this tool and post back the results ?
What do you mean by external antenna ?
Have you tried turning on your wireless device ? F2 or (Fn+F2)

jeev,
In addition to Telson's advice...
start, control panel, device manager, network, Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card, advanced. Look for antenna diversity. Change it from Auto, to Aux, then restart your computer.
Places to look to see it your Connection is enabled

Click on the wireless icon with 'x' , select 'Open network and sharing center' on the left select 'Change adapter settings' and then right click on the wireless adapter and select 'Enable'

Click on start type 'Device Manager' , Expand 'Network Adapters', and post a screen shot of the same.
In addition right click on the Dell wireless and click on properties, post a screenshot
