Lets do some basic IP (Internet Protocol) Network checks first............which is the underlying network protocol for Web browsing and email - to make sure that the foundations are okay.

(1) Is your computer set for dynamic IP address allocation - DHCP or static IP...check via the network connection and TCP/IP properties tab.....should be DHCP ideally

(2) Does your computer get allocated an IP address ok ? - check by Start - Run - winipcfg (Win98)......this is a part of windows "Windows IP Configuration" and will tell you if its communicating okay with the router. You should have the IP address, Subnet mask and default gateway fields all populated.

(3) Assuming all the above are okay can you ping the router "Start - Run - command"....this will open a DOS shell window for your - white on black.......just issue the command "ping ip_address" where Ip_address is the default-gateway (router) IP address - dotted decimal series of numbers. You should get a "Reply in X ms" if all is well

I did what you said & instead of getting "Reply in X ms", what I got was "unknown host ip-address".   Later I went to the box for TCP/IP Settings: that all the numbers in the box earlier were gone.

Thank you -

IP Configuration:  PPP Adapter; Adapter Address: 44-45-53-00-00; IP Address: 209.131.225.184; Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0; Default Gateway: 209.131.225.184

Okay - the good news is that you are using DHCP and getting relevant info okay.

can you repeat the ping command for me - from the Start -> Run -> command (press enter to get the white on black DOS window)

ping 209.131.225.184

and let me know if this works

Can you you ensure that you have valid IP address info in "winipcfg" window - which you first off.

If the ping still fails when you have a valid IP address, subnet mask and default gateway, then issue this command and paste resukts here :

Start -> Run -> cmd

netstat  -r

Hi Sentinel-Master -

Once I put in "netstat  -r":

this is what I got:

Route Table

Active Routes:

Network Address        Netmask     Gateway Address     Interface       Metric

               0.0.0.0            0.0.0.0       209.131.228.67      209.131.228.67    1

Active Connection

Proto    Local Address    Foreign Address    State

________________________________________________________________

I don't know if these things are important but I thought I'd mention them to you:

1) IP Address - 209.131.225.184

2) In the Dial-Up box, there's not supposed to be an Area Code BUT there is this, 50   1 and the Telphone #.  I've checked in the Outlook Express(Tools - Accounts) & on the Internet(Tools - Internet Options - Connections) & those connections only have the Local Phone #.

3) Everytime I try to send email I get this message:

The host 'stmp.ll.net' could not be found.  Pls. verify that you have entered the server name correctly.  Acct: 'pop3.ll.net', Server: 'smtp.ll.net', Protocol:SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

The host 'pop3.ll.net' could not be found.  Pls. verify that you have enetered the server name correctly.  Acct: 'pop3.ll.net' Server: 'pop3.ll.net', Protocol: POP3, Port:110, Secure(SSL), No, Socket Error: 11001, Error number: 0x800CCC0D

Thank you -

Until we get your IP address info sorted - you will get these type of Error messages as the Email program is unable to send Ip datagrams to the correct address - or resolve it.

The routing table info was interesting - because your PC's TCP/IP stack seems to be pointing to itself - rather than your ISP/dial up connection.

Can you confirm that you  only have a dial-up connection, no DSL or Cable connections ?

Try re-dialling up, and then Start -> Run -> winipcfg

Then on the pop up screen - ensure that you have PPP adaptor chosen, and "Release_All and then Renew_All.

Please then enter the info here of IP_Address, Subnet_mask & Default Gateway.  Would aslo be good if you could "ping" the default gateway from a DOS command sheel "Start - Run - Command" and let me know if this works this time.

Hi Sentinel-Master -

Can you confirm that you  only have a dial-up connection [YES], no DSL or Cable connections ?

Try re-dialling up, and then Start -> Run -> winipcfg

Then on the pop up screen - ensure that you have PPP adaptor chosen, and "Release_All and then Renew_All.  [When I clicked on either Release_All  or Renew_All - nothing happened so I wasn't able to enter any new info].  Don't know why it didn't work???]

Please then enter the info here of IP_Address, Subnet_mask & Default Gateway.  Would aslo be good if you could "ping" the default gateway from a DOS command sheel "Start - Run - Command" and let me know if this works this time.

I don't completely understand about Release All & Renew All[ Am I supposed to be able to enter numbers???]  Because nothing happened when I clicked on Release All & then Renew All.  I wasn't able to enter any correct info.  I obviously don't know how to do that.

After entering "winipcfg" in Run, this was what I received:

____________________________________________________________

IP Configuration

Host Name:  Peg Kirby

DNS Servers: 209.131.224.103

Node Type:  Broadcast

IP Routing Enabled:  nothing

Ethernet Adapter Info:  PPP Adapter

Adapter Address:  44-45-53-54-00-00

IP Address:  209.131.227.94

Subnet Mask:  255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 209.131.227.94

DHCP Server:  255.255.255.255

Primary WINS Server       nothing

Secondary WINS Server   nothing

Lease Obtained   01 01 80   12:00:00AM

Lease Expires     01 01 80   12:00:00AM

________________________________________________________

Then about a half-hour later I rechecked "winicpfg" & this is what "IP Configuation" said:

Node Type: Broadcast

Adapter Address:  44-45-53-54-00-00

IP Address:  209.131.225.184

Subnet Mask:  255.255.255.0

And nothing else

WHY DID THAT CHANGE?

___________________________________________________________

One other item, I went into

Control Panel -> Network ->

TCP/IP Properties

DNS Config - Disabled

Gateway - nothing

WINS Config. - Use DHCP Resolution

IP Address - IP Address 209.131.225.184

                     Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Bindings  - Ck'd 'Microsoft Family Logon'

Advanced  -   nothing

NetBIOS    -   nothing

Does this mean anything?  Thank you -

Doesn't "Use default gateway on remote network" need to be selected? See Steps 2C and 2D illustrated here.

When you release or refresh on teh Winipcfg pop up screen - all you have to do is press the buttons - nothin else.

What should happen when you <Release> is the fields all go to 0.0.0.0 - effectively releasing or flushing out the Ip info. then with a you are requesting valid IP info from the ISP's DHCP server...the fact you receive this info - means that your dial up connection is working and IP info can flow.,,,,this a good thing

Now to the problem - it would appear that you're loosing the default router -which you need......and looking at the info you posted - I have a concern - because all DHCP info carries a lease time - i.e how long your PC is llowed to hold and use that information before giving it back.  Your lease time is non-existent - the info is due to expire as soon as you get it......it should be 12 hours, 24 hours or days normally for a lease - depending on the ISP.

Lease Obtained   01 01 80   12:00:00AM

Lease Expires     01 01 80   12:00:00AM

Actions

(1) Check that your PC clock is set to the correct date & time - see Control Panel for this - Time/Date

(2) Check with your ISP about DHCP Lease time and tell them that you Lease your receive is very very short - in fact zero......it may be a config error on their part.

Let us know what you find out.....

I've called the Provider about this Lease Time.  He seemed to think it might be something about the modem.  So I went Modem  Prop in Control Panel & this is what I saw.

Modem Properties:

On the General Tab:  US Robotics 56K Voice Win

On the Diagnostics Tab:

Port:

COM1 No Modem Installed  (This is the one that's selected but I think COM2 is the right one.)

COM2 US Robotics 56K Voice Win

How I can correct that?  Otherwise, he can see webpages once again.  And seems to be receiving & sending email.

That's great...Thank you!!!

To answer you modem query , goto :

Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections  -> Settings -> Properties -> Configure

This should show your expected modem (US Robotics 56K Voice Win) and the General label with   Port : COM2

If s everything is fine - and you don't have to change any settings for the modem.

Note : Normally expected DHCP lease info looks like this

      Lease Obtained. . . . . . . : 03 19 04  21:06:23
        Lease Expires . . . . . . . :   03 20 04 21:06:23     <=====  leased for 24 hours

The modem would not be setting or playing with the DHCP lease time - it just transports the data from digital information into coded pulses or tones onto the phone wires. Please re-check your clock/date settings on your friends PC as well.
