window firewall off I6000

Hi fellows, every time i turn on my PC, i find my window firewall always turned off, I have to manually turn it on every time before I get on to the internet. Why is it that my w/firewall turn it self off every time i turn my PC off?
Is there anyway that w/firewall would stay on for good? Any info is greatly appreciated. Best regards Latin.

Aloha Latin,

I'm assuming and fairly certain your OS is WinXP SP2.

"Click here" for Microsoft's article on Enabling/Disabling their Firewall and "click here" for a guide on "Manually Configuring Windows Firewall in Windows XP Service Pack 2".

You can also try... click Start/Run/type services.msc, scroll down to the Firewall entry and see if it's started/set to "Automatic".

Or you can use a better 3rd party Firewall ("click here"). I use the free version ZoneAlarm to monitor/block unauthorized outgoing as well as incoming intrusion threats.

Aloha,

Has this been happening since the day you have your 6000 or since last week after Windows Update or Automatic Update?

Reports are coming out about one of the patches last week being flawed and can turn off Windows Firewall.

The patch that "Esquire" is alluding to is described in this Microsoft Security Bulletin ("click here").
Dell user "Volcano11" has posted (yesterday) about this problem in every Dell "Networking" forum ("click here").

The MS article "Volcano11" links to is "here". The below is an excerpt from this article:
SYMPTOMS
... one or more problems may occur after you install the critical update that is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051. These problems include the following:
• The Windows Installer service may not start.
• The Windows Firewall Service may not start.
• The Network Connections folder is empty.
• The Windows Update Web site may incorrectly recommend that you change the Userdata persistence setting in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
• Active Server Pages (ASP) pages that are running on Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) return an “HTTP 500 – Internal Server Error” error message.
• The Microsoft COM+ EventSystem service will not start.
• COM+ applications will not start.
• The computers node in the Microsoft Component Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) tree will not expand.
• Authenticated users cannot log on, and a blank screen appears after the users apply the October Security Updates.
...

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, restore the default permissions to the COM+ catalog. To do this, follow these steps:
1. In the %windir%/registration folder, make sure that the Everyone group has READ permissions.
2. In the %windir%/registration folder, make sure that the SYSTEM account has FULL CONTROL permissions.
3. In the %windir%/registration folder, make sure that the Administrators group has FULL CONTROL permissions.
4. In the advanced security properties of the .clb files in the %windir%/registration folder, make sure that the Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here option is selected.

5. Make sure that the Everyone group has one of the following permissions:
• Traverse permissions (“List Folder Contents”) on all parent directories, including %systemdrive%, %windir%, and %windir%\registration
• The Bypass Traverse Checking permission
...

APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (32-bit x86)
• Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86)
• Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86)
