windows 98 restricting speeds???

Hi my network speed was upgraded from 2mb to around 4.5mb

In the the network i have 3 pc's (one is win 98) and a xp laptop.

They all recieved the same typical speeds of around 230kb for a 2mb connection. When i was upgraded to the 4.5mb all the computers upgraded but my windows 98 pc is still 'stuck' on 2mb...

All computers are on wireless (apart from the one connected by ethernet)

My win 98 pc is furthest away from router, so i thought that the signal may be weak, so i moved the computer and got my wireless adapter upto max signal, but no change........

I have tried a few registry tweaks but this hasn't made the slightest difference.

I really don't understand why it is like this. It's obvious that it is a windows 98 problem???

So all computers have around 550kb whereas '98 pc is at around 220kb.

so please, someone help me??? does win 98 not support these speeds???

THANKS A LOT

May i also include:

deleted all temp internet files, history etc
done adware checks
defragmented system

try a program called cablenut and load the settings appropriate to your OS and connection.  it's worked well for me and for others whose wireless connection seemed stuck around 2.

THANKS!

I didn't really that this program would make a difference as other tweaks didn't but it has increased speeds by around 30-40kbps.

So still really far off what I should be though...

so any more help would once again be very helpful

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR THE PROGRAM ANYWAY, getting me somewhere

40kbps is what, 5kilobytes per second?  I'm surprised you can really tell the difference if that's all ;p   or did you mean 40kilobytes per second?

whoever made bits and bytes start with the same letter was an idiot

how's your CPU utilization look during these transfers?

Yeah sorry I meant an extra 50Kb per second

Computer runs fine, basically since upgrade speed just hasn't really increased at all which is strange considering the rest have. I still think it must be somthing to do with it being windows 98 but i really can't think what..

thanks again
